April 5 Daily

The soldier emperors were a group a soldiers that took the highest office of the Roman Empire.  There were so many soldiers during this time that claimed they were emperor, only to be assassinated or replaced in some other way by another soldier.  This was a very rocky time for the Roman Empire.  The last emperor of this era of soldier emperors was Diocletian.  Diocletian established a new way of ruling for the leader, now leaders, of the Roman Empire.  His idea was that if there were multiple emperors ruling, one could not rise up and take all the power.  There would be four emperors, two more powerful, and two less powerful.  This idea worked finely; however, after Diocletian died, the system collapsed.  Basically, the Roman Empire was torn apart by these belligerent and power-hungry soldier emperors.   There was great instability within the empire, along with economic issues and invasion by other nations.  After this era, the Empire was set on a track to reunification that was eventually reached by Diocletian’s successor, Aurelian.  The Empire is significantly different after this era of soldier empires, given that the government is much more stable than before.  The Empire was once again being led by emperors focused on resolving the issues of the Empire, as well as its reunification as one entity – rather than multiple territories set on defeating one another.  In my opinion, the post-third century crisis Roman Empire was in a much better condition than it had been in a long time.
