The Romans invented and developed many things we use today.  These include:

Socks

Roman men and women were among the first to sport footwear such as socks.

The English Language

The Romans developed the Latin language, which was the foundation for the future Romance languages - French, Spanish, and English.

  1. The origin of English is a bit more complex. It's actually a Germanic language akin to German and Dutch, but because the French-speaking Normans invaded England in 1066, the original Germanic language was merged with the French; on top of that, the Normans brought Latin in the form of laws and the bible -- thus today about 70% of English vocabulary is from Latin.
